(Bloomfield)— A rash of car thefts is under investigation by the Davis County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff deputies say at least five vehicle were stolen early Thursday morning.  Among the vehicles stolen early Thursday was a Hummer H2 and another vehicle stolen from Drakesville.  That vehicle was found later in the morning near the intersection of the Copperhead Road and 100th Street in Wapello County.  Deputies say the vehicle was totaled out following an accident with a minivan.  The minivan was recovered during the day Thursday in the Des Moines River near Ottumwa.

Davis County sheriff Dave Davis says he believes who ever is stealing the vehicles are using them to race with.  Once the vehicles are severely damaged, the person involved go and steal another vehicle to race .

Davis also says, in each case the vehicles stolen had keys left in the ignition.
