(Ottumwa) – A popular restaurant in downtown Ottumwa has been destroyed following an overnight fire. 

The fire was reported at 12:08 a.m. at the El Rancho Grande restaurant at the intersection of Jefferson and East Main streets.

Ottumwa fire Chief Tony  Miller told Ottumwa Radio when firemen arrived on the scene, there was smoke coming from the building.  Miller said at first firemen thought they had a handle on the fire, then the fire broke through the roof.

The three story building is located adjacent to the Jefferson Street Viaduct.

Gas and electrical services have  been shut off to the area.

Ottumwa Radio is operating off of portable generators.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.  There were no injuries.
