There were some anxious moments Thursday afternoon on the City North Side after a natural gas line was struck.

Officials say shortly before 3:00 p.m. crews from Lisco struck a gas line at the intersection of East Alta Vista and Elm Streetafter some equipment malfunctioned.

Linda Stallone vice president of customer relations for Lisco says machinery that bores down and digs deep apparently malfunctioned.

As a precautionary measures two houses in the area were evacuated.  Ottumwa Fire Department officials say a perimeter was established as a safe zone for crews from Mid-American Energy Company.

No injuries were reported.
