The Ottumwa High baseball team shook off a sweep in its season-opening doubleheader, traveling to Fairfield Friday night and hammering the Trojans 15-2.  OHS improves to 1-2 on the season, while Fairfield drops to 0-2.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring early, getting the first two men on base before Collin Schulz blasted a three-run home run to left.  Fairfield scored a run in the bottom of the first, but OHS roared back with an 11-run second inning that put the game out of reach.  The two big blows in the frame belonged to Bryce Ward, who hit a three-run double, and Seth Griffiths, who ripped a three-run homer to right.  Ottumwa only hit one home run as a team all of last season, but the 2013 squad doubled that total in one night.

Ward (1-0) also pitched well for Ottumwa, working his way out of a couple of jams and allowing just two runs in his four innings of work.  Schulz ended the night 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in five runs and coming up just a double short of the cycle.

Ottumwa returns to action Wednesday at 7:30 for a single game at Legion Memorial Field against Centerville.  The game will be broadcast on 1240 KBIZ.
