(Ottumwa)— The 40th annual Oktoberfest gets under way today in Ottumwa. The event unofficially got under way Tuesday evening with the Ottumwa Rotary club’s chicken BBQ.
Wednesday and continuing through Saturday thousands of those delicious Johnsonville brats will be served. In addition to the brats, this year the Oktoberfest committee will be serving hot dogs for the kids. The Oktoberfest tent will open each day at 11:00 a.m. Tonight on stage a new group Full Load will perform from 6:00 until 10:00 p.m. D&D Amusements will be up and running in the Market Street parking lot throughout the event with wrist band Thursday evening and again Sunday.
Each night of Oktoberfest a different group will perform. Again this year two parades will be held with the first parade, the kiddie parade, Friday evening at 5:30. One of the largest parades in southeast Iowa will be held Saturday in downtown Ottumwa. Once again, this year, Ottumwa Radio will be broadcasting the parade in its entirety. You can hear the parade on 1240 AM KBIZ, beginning at 10 a.m.
Jack Guitar from the Oktoberfest Committee says up to 17 bands are entered for this year’s parade, which is a state sanctioned event for the high school bands. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning from O’Hara Hardware on West Main Street. Those entered in the parade are reminded candy cannot be thrown from floats.
Following the parade Band Drum Line competition will take place in the Oktoberfest tent followed by the presentation of awards.
Oktoberfest will close out Saturday night with “Sez Who” performing on the Oktoberfest tent. All proceeds from Oktoberfest remain in the community.
