(Ottumwa)— When the Ottumwa City Council meets in regular session Tuesday evening at 6:30 in the council chamber of City Hall, the council will again take up a request to rezone property in the 23-hundred block of North Court.

Ottumwa veterinarian Dr. Steve Menke is requesting his property at 2305 North Court be rezoned from R-1 residential to C-1 Retail Business.

The Ottumwa Veterinary Clinic has operated on this property since the 1980’s and is a legal nonconforming use, a designation which allows permits the use but restricts expansion or significant alterations to the structure.

Ottumwa Veterinary Clinic has merged with a Minnesota Company and Menke wants to expand his  place of business.  A significant portion of the business operations is professional off site  consulting so the subject property serves as an office suite.

During a public hearing two weeks ago a number of residents spoke out against the zoning request for a number of reasons.

The City Planning and Zoning Commission has found the property to be appropriate for the C-1 zoning classification.  The commission held a public hearing on April 1st, and voted unanimously in favor of the request.
