(Release from Fairfield Police Department) – Fairfield Police Department (FPD) was notified on July 6th, 2013 at 6:11 PM by Burlington Northern – Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) of a train striking a pedestrian. Officers responded and determined the pedestrian was deceased. A death investigation was launched by FPD at the scene. FPD was assisted by numerous agencies during this investigation The agencies included BNSF officials, the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, the Fairfield Fire Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, and the Midwest  Ambulance Service. The decedent’s name is being withheld at this time, pending notification of all family members and the conclusion of the investigation.


Fairfield Police apologized for the delay in moving the train.  The train could not be moved until the crime scene was processed and another train crew from BNSF could arrive to operate it. Please contact FPD for further questions and thank you.
